Current Research

The Cost of Convenience

A collaboration with filmmaker and writer Alix Dick, we are currently exploring the myriad costs of undocumented life in the U.S. If you are interested in learning more about this project, how you could be involved, and future writing, please consider signing up for our free newsletter, La Cuenta.

Speculative Pedagogies

An ongoing excavation of the limits of contemporary schooling systems, this work argues for speculative approaches to education and educational research. My inquiries into this area are a collaborative effort co-led by Dr. Nicole Mirra. Annually, we have convened the Speculative Education Colloquium; related scholarship include recent journal articles, recorded talks, special issues, and forthcoming books.

Civic Possibilities

Much of my classroom-based research asks how we might create liberatory civic learning opportunities for students and teachers. What does this work look like within the fractured contexts of contemporary American democracy? My forthcoming book with Nicole Mirra, Civics for the World to Come: Committing to Democracy in Every Classroom, is a practical guide for teachers seeking to center civics across disciplinary areas. Several of my other books also speak to different dimensions of this work as well

Analog Dreaming

My gaming-related research explores non-digital systems of communication, collaboration, and learning. I’ve focused on tabletop games in order to understand the connections between systems, human interactions, and the possibilities for collaborative storytelling and play. My book, Good Reception, offers some game design tips for educators and is available to read for free here. Several articles (and two forthcoming books) also speak to this research.
